Microsoft offers Unified Communications licensed as part of the cloud-based Office 365 portfolio and its on-premises Office offering. The cloud UC solution Skype for Business Online (SfBO) is being merged with Microsoft Teams, a cloud-based workstream collaboration solution.
Skype for Business is used by many clients as a partial and complete replacement for legacy IP PBXs or UC platforms. Many Enabling clients are using Skype for Business as a messages and meetings solution as well as it's enterprise voice features. Skype for Business integrates well with partners such as Polycom and Logitech for its meeting solutions portfolio. However, most of Microsoft's future development effort is in replicating Skype for Business functionality in Microsoft Teams.
Within the Microsoft portfolio, Skype for Business remains the most suitable platform for a broad range of enterprises Unified Communications requirements. Organizations with advanced telephony and video requirements should check that the necessary functions are supported and (as for any VoIP deployment) undertake a thorough network-readiness assessment.
